What is a smile design?
Smile design is a comprehensive aesthetic procedure that combines photographic facial analysis, digital planning and restorative techniques (veneers, whitening, contouring, minor orthodontics) to achieve a smile that harmonizes with your face. It is not just an aesthetic treatment — it is a clinical process that respects your bite, chewing function and facial proportions.
As an Oral Rehabilitation specialist trained at Javeriana, I plan every smile design with prior functional analysis. This prevents results that look great initially but cause occlusion problems in the medium term. The goal is a natural, lasting smile that feels like yours from day one.
Treatments that compose a smile design
Dental veneers (porcelain or resin)
Ultra-thin sheets bonded to the tooth surface to correct color, shape or size. Porcelain veneers last longer (10-15 years) and resist staining. Resin veneers are less invasive and done in one visit.
Professional whitening
In-office sessions with LED-activated gel. Lightens 4-8 shades in 3-4 sessions of 45 minutes. No permanent sensitivity. Complemented with home maintenance system.
Dental contouring and reshape
Small shape adjustments with rotary instruments to align incisal edges and correct subtle asymmetries. Conservative procedure, no anesthesia required.
Digital facial analysis
Standardized clinical photographs, simulation in dental design software, and prior mock-up simulation with resin so you see the result before making the decision.
The step-by-step process
Assessment and facial analysis
45-60 minutes. Clinical photos, bite analysis, periodontal health evaluation and conversation about what you're seeking. I provide a personalized written plan.
Digital simulation and mock-up
We design your smile in dental software. In a second visit I test a resin mock-up on your teeth (no shaving). You see the projected result before approving treatment.
Clinical preparation
If we choose veneers, minimal preparation is done (0.3-0.5 mm). For prior whitening, that goes first. Digital impressions are taken for the lab.
Smile execution
Placement of definitive veneers, whitening or final adjustments. One or two visits depending on the plan. Occlusion, color and form are verified.
Follow-up and maintenance
Check at 15 days and at 3 months. Annual maintenance with professional cleaning and whitening touch-ups if applicable.
Who is a candidate for smile design?
You are a good candidate if you have worn, stained or irregularly shaped teeth; if your smile shows asymmetries that bother you; if your teeth are healthy but you want an aesthetic change; or if you want to prepare your smile for a special occasion (wedding, professional photos, public exposure).
Before planning, I do a periodontal and bite evaluation. If there are active cavities, gum disease or occlusal problems, we stabilize first. Smile design is always built on a foundation of oral health. I work with patients from 18 years old (when dental maturation has stabilized) to any age — the design adapts to each person's facial maturity.
Why choose an Oral Rehabilitation specialist
A smile design performed by an Oral Rehabilitation specialist includes functional bite analysis — something many purely aesthetic designs skip. When several anterior teeth are modified without respecting occlusal function, results can fracture, cause TMJ pain, or need redoing within a few years.
As a graduate and professor of the Oral Rehabilitation specialty at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, I plan each case with functional and aesthetic clinical criteria. I have 11 years of experience in Bogotá with over 250 active patients and a case-by-case approach, not pre-designed packages.

Frequently asked questions — Smile Design
- How much does a smile design cost in Bogotá?
- Cost depends on the number of veneers, whether prior whitening is required, the material chosen (porcelain or resin) and the complexity of the case. At the initial assessment I provide a detailed written quote, with no commitment, after performing the facial analysis and digital simulation. We coordinate payment plans for extensive treatments.
- How long does a smile design treatment take?
- A complete smile design typically takes between 3 and 8 weeks. This includes the initial assessment, prior whitening (3-4 weeks if applicable), lab veneer fabrication (2-3 weeks) and placement appointments. Designs with only whitening and contouring complete in 4-6 weeks. I provide a specific timeline at the assessment.
- Are dental veneers permanent?
- Veneers are a durable restoration but not eternal. Well-cared-for porcelain veneers last between 10 and 15 years (some longer). Resin veneers last 5 to 8 years. Duration depends on hygiene, bruxism habit and periodic check-ups. When replaced, usually only the veneer is changed, not the underlying tooth.
- Does smile design hurt?
- The procedure is very comfortable. Dental preparation for veneers is minimally invasive (0.3-0.5 mm) and performed with local anesthesia when necessary. Most patients report mild sensitivity to cold foods for 24-72 hours after placement, which resolves with common analgesics. Whitening can cause temporary sensitivity manageable with desensitizers.
- Can I see how I'll look before starting treatment?
- Yes. In the second appointment I perform a resin mock-up directly on your teeth (without preparing them) that shows the proposed design. I also provide a computer digital simulation. This allows you to approve the projected result before any irreversible preparation. It is one of the most important moments of the process.
- Can a smile design be done with only whitening?
- If your teeth have good shape, correct alignment and only need color improvement, yes. Professional whitening combined with edge contouring can transform the smile without veneers. We evaluate this in the initial assessment: sometimes the desired result is achieved with the least invasive option.
